The tenth and final in our series of DIY studio adventures. This is The Gracious Deviants pared down to basics, a bookend to a very enjoyable and fruitful adventure. This is a song about love conquering a lack of confidence, set across two generations. Photos may fade, but old memories never will, especially the best ones.

The ninth in our series of DIY studio adventures. This one was a long time coming, with many different iterations tried and then shelved, until a mammoth edit session knocked it into shape over a weekend. This is a bit of a departure from our acoustic roots, but it is still very Graciously Deviant.

The Way She Looks

Lead vocal: Darrel.
This is the eighth in our series of DIY studio adventures. This is a song of envy and unrequited love. We were very happy with the way this one turned out in the studio and hope you like it too!

The seventh in our series of DIY studio adventures. This one has been a long time coming, with the craziness of the last few months running down to Christmas we've had to push its release as we struggled to nail down the last little bits. I can't believe we started recording this in November 2017 and released it in January 2019!

Things Don't Come Any Better

Lead vocal: Darrel.
This is the sixth in our series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. This is a song of optimistic pessimism (or pessimistic optimism) where the phrase "it doesn't get any better than this" can change depending on your mood.

Leave A Light On

Lead vocal: Darrel.
This is the fifth in our series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. This is a song about love and loss, but remaining hopeful in the face of it all. The initial tracks were recorded on a rainy Winter afternoon.

Lead vocal: Pete.
This is the fourth in our series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. This recording has the most tracks (and the longest gestation period) of all of our DIY adventures.

More Than A Road

Lead vocal: Darrel.
This is the third in a series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. It is an introspective song about a stretch of highway across the Central Plateau of New Zealand's North Island.

Still Got A Hold On You

Lead vocal: Pete.
This is the second in a series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. A song about love, loss, and memory. There are some people in your life you just can't seem to forget…

The Thought of You

Lead vocal: Pete.
This is the first in what became a series of DIY studio adventures where we sang, played, and mixed everything ourselves. This is a love song, but is it a memory or a fantasy? This song took a lot of work, and a whole lot of time, but it was so satisfying!

Lead vocal: Darrel.
Recorded at Darrel’s, mixed at Pete’s.
Before The Gracious Deviants, among many other musical endeavours, Darrel enjoyed some success as a solo singer/songwriter in Auckland. This is one of his solo efforts given Deviant treatment and enfolded into the canon. It is an upbeat song but has a wonderfully ambiguous first line:
“Is this our finest hour, or is it all downhill from here?”

I See

Lead vocal: Pete.
Recorded at Darrel's and mixed at Pete’s.
This song was one of the first recorded on our frequently dead and resurrected ProTools rig, left forgotten for months and finally finished off with bass and drums on a Saturday at Pete's place. Inspired by a Summer day in Island Bay, Wellington. When the wind stops and the sun shines in Wellington and you're on the beach, life is... almost... perfect.
